POTENTIAL PORT STRIKE ADVISORY (JANUARY 2025)
As many of you are aware, the United States dockworkers represented by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) briefly went on strike in October 2024, halting operations at multiple ports. While a tentative labor agreement was reached at that time, the current contract extension is set to expire on January 15, 2025.
Negotiations between the ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) resumed on January 7, 2025, but there remains a possibility that the agreement could be rejected during the ratification process, which might result in another dockside strike.
In the event of a strike, the duration and the ports impacted could create challenges for event-related shipping and transportation. To mitigate the risk of delays, we strongly encourage our members to communicate with exhibitors and advise them to plan ahead. Specifically:
- Ship Early: Encourage exhibitors to send their exhibits and products earlier than usual to avoid potential disruptions.
- Advance Warehouse Options: Remind exhibitors to confirm if advance warehouses are available to accept shipments earlier than standard timelines. Many service providers, for instance, are offering early acceptance of international shipments without additional fees.
While this situation continues to unfold, it is vital to stay informed and proactive. The possibility of disruptions underscores the importance of careful logistical planning. We recommend checking with your shipping partners and ensuring exhibitors are aware of their options for managing any potential delays.
The Exhibition Services & Contractors Association (ESCA) will monitor developments closely and provide updates as they become available. In the meantime, if you have specific concerns or questions about how to best prepare, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
